《Deluge》

Deluge is a reflection on life and loss. Its background is the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot in 2009, which devastated mountain communities across southern Taiwan. Through field research, Autumn Cedar Sóo-Tsāi explores narratives of human trauma resulting from this major natural disaster. The piece is mainly inspired by a solemn Taoist ritual for lost souls, which serves to help us contemplate existence and loss. The ritual also aims to cultivate gratitude for the land and the living, while helping us cope with the idea of power and cruelty of nature, in both its tangible and shapeless manifestations. Deluge first premiered in 2019 and was selected as a finalist at Japan’s Yokohama Dance Collection. In 2020, it was nominated for the Taishin Arts Award, one of Taiwan’s most prestigious accolades.

秋杉所在

Dance ensemble Autumn Cedar Sóo-Tsāi presents traditional Taiwanese folk culture in a contemporary context. Led by choreographer and founder LIN Ting-syu, the group uses fieldwork research and grassroots community outreach to inform its productions, which have included the use of Taoist rituals practiced in Taiwan. On a larger level, LIN is interested in the relationship between nature and the individual, and the existential meaning of the body. Under his direction, the group’s works also explore how the contemporary body connects to personal spirituality. In 2019, the ensemble’s work Deluge was selected as a Yokohama Dance Collection finalist. That same year, The Invincible Swiftness of Golden Crow won the Best Performer Award at 24MASDANZA, the International Contemporary Dance Festival in Spain, and the “Highly Qualified Dance Artist” award by the Seoul International Choreography Festival.
