《In Factory》
In Factory, by choreographer CHANG Chung-an, is about the fear and anxieties of modern life in a capitalist society, played out in the workplaces of today. Using automated mobile stage platforms and adopting the movement language of the factory worker, CHANG plays with the dynamic and static in his choreography to express human fear and anxiety. With this work, CHANG has in mind young people who have dreams, their worries about survival, and how they cope in an age of overwhelming information. “To me, society is like a vortex for human beings,” he says. “It may be a group, a system, or a pattern. And people living in this situation may have no choice but to be pulled in. Once you’re there, it’s difficult to find an exit.”

Resident Island Dance Theatre
With kinetic brilliance and innovative staging, Resident Island Dance Theatre draws inspiration from everyday life to discover new possibilities for freedom expressed in the language of dance. Founded and directed by maverick choreographer CHANG Chung-an, the group has dancers with disabilities as part of its ensemble. CHANG, who is visually impaired, approaches his craft as a form of deep communication that transcends language. CHANG’s recent choreography is rooted in observations of everyday habits of movement, such as that of the factory line worker or a person living under COVID-era quarantine. As the troupe’s dancers undergo moments of entropy and organization, and crisis and harmony, insights on the human condition unfold. RIDT has performed at London’s Unlimited Festival, Edinburgh Fringe, Istanbul Fringe, American Dance Festival, and Jacob’s Pillow Festival, and was selected for 2020 and 2024 Avignon’s Off Festival. RIDT has also participated in the US Department of State’s Center Stage program.
