《Luna》
Luna is a work deeply tied to Taiwanese indigenous life and practices. In preparation for the production, choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava, joined by members of his ensemble, spent time living with a Bunun tribe in Luluna, Nantou County. While there, the dancers learned traditional survival skills in the high mountain forests of Southern Taiwan, as well as ancient Bunun song chants, which are considered one of the world’s most unique musical treasures. These experiences resulted in Luna’s performance of Bunun vocal music and a choreographic presentation of Bunun hunting mythology – all conveyed through the prism of the dancer’s inner journey. As the company’s fifth production, Luna was originally commissioned by the National Taichung Theater and premiered in 2018, and presented at Fall for Dance North in Toronto, Canada, in 2019. It won the Taishin Arts Award Grand Prize that same year. In 2022, Luna was the opening show of the Yokohama Performing Meetings (YPAM) in Yokohama, Japan. In 2023 Malaysia tour, Luna visited The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre and the George Town Festival in Penang.

Bulareyaung Dance Company
The Bulareyaung Dance Company was founded by Bulareyaung Pagarlava, an indigenous choreographer of Paiwan descent from Taiwan. After a widely hailed career that included work with Cloud Gate 2 and the Martha Graham Company, Bulareyaung formed BDC in 2015 as part of a personal journey to return to his indigenous roots. Based in Taitung on Taiwan’s southeast Pacific coast, BDC’s dancers typically train by working in the mountains and engaging in traditional music rituals. The group’s works are also drawn from this process, with Taiwanese indigenous tradition and practices serving as an important creative inspiration for the ensemble’s body vocabulary. BDC has performed all over the world, including Taiwan’s own National Theater. The Company was a recipient of the Taishin Arts Awards, one of Taiwan’s most prestigious arts awards, on two separate occasions for its works Stay That Way and Luna.
